Russia threatens retaliation if NATO admits Sweden, Finland

Russian officials warned that the country will increase troops on the western flank, deploy nuclear weapons to the Baltic region if Sweden and Finland join NATO.

“If Switzerland and Finland becoming a member of NATO, the length of the border between Russia and this military alliance will more than double. It is clear that the border line will have to be fortified. At that time, we need to restore the balance and cannot discuss a non-nuclear state in the Baltic region,” said Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev today.

Mr. Medvedev, who served as Russia’s president, insisted that Moscow had not taken these measures, and urged “northern neighbors” to think carefully about their decision. Russia has so far not deployed nuclear-capable missiles or warships to the Baltic region.

“The admission of Finland and Sweden to NATO will make Russia more official opponents. The number of members in NATO is not so important to Moscow. We will react with a cool head and not let emotions take over. ace,” Medvedev added.

Sheet Times of Britain on April 11 quoted an official America Finland may apply to join NATO in June, followed by Sweden.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg last week said the alliance would welcome Finland and Sweden if they decide to apply. He affirmed that NATO is ready to provide security guarantees for the two countries from the moment they announce their decision to join NATO until the application is approved. However, Secretary-General Stoltenberg declined to detail what security guarantees the block could provide.

Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said earlier this month that the country needed to decide on its plan to join NATO “radically but quickly”, while Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said at the end of March that “it cannot be ruled out”. become a member of NATO”.

Before launching a military operation in Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin demanded that NATO stop expanding eastward and withdraw its troops from the area near the Russian border. The prospect of Finland and Sweden, two traditionally neutral countries in Europe, joining NATO is expected to upset Russia.

Finland shares a border of more than 1,300 km with Russia. They became neutral through a treaty of friendship with the Soviet Union in 1948, with the hope of preventing a recurrence of the 1939 Finnish-Soviet war, which killed more than 80,000 soldiers.

Throughout the Cold War, the Nordic nation maintained its principle of non-alignment, despite the influence of both blocs led by the Soviet Union and the United States. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Finland gradually shifted its foreign focus to the West, marked by its decision to join the EU in 1995.

Sweden also chose the same path after the end of the Cold War, joining the EU in 1995 and strengthening cooperation with NATO, but for many years refused to become a full member of this military bloc.

Sweden has avoided joining any military alliance for more than 200 years. Before the war in Ukraine broke out, the last time Sweden sent weapons aid abroad was during the Finnish-Soviet war in 1939.
