Tourist Yves Strybos witnessed the interaction between a female buffalo and a leopard in Kruger National Park, South Africa at the end of March. While visiting, Strybos was informed that a leopard had just killed its prey. Even though it is a young buffalo, it is still rare for a leopard to be able to avoid an aggressive herd of buffalo and successfully hunt its prey.

However, after the leopard carried her prey across the road, the mother buffalo did not give up. It stood next to the tree where the leopard spent most of the day to claim the body. Strybos and his crew approached and saw several hyenas and cows panicking. At first, they assumed the buffalo was injured and the hyenas followed it. However, when they looked up the tree, they found a large male leopard holding a young buffalo carcass.

The mother buffalo is constantly circling around the tree. At the same time, the leopard tries to pull the body higher and hide it in a safe place. After a while, it jumped from the tree and ran away from the female buffalo. It was not until late afternoon, after making sure that the mother buffalo was no longer there, that it returned to eat its prey.

The leopard (Panthera pardus) is one of four large cats of the genus Panthera that live in Africa and Asia. They are from 1 to nearly 2 meters long, weighing 30 – 90 kg. Females are usually about 2/3 as small as males. Although smaller than other large cats, leopards are effective predators. With their camouflage and hiding habits, they can get close to their target without being detected.

The African buffalo, also known as the Cape buffalo, is one of the Big Five, along with the lion, leopard, rhinoceros and elephant. This buffalo can weigh 1,000 kg. Buffalo is widely distributed in eastern and southern Africa and is not an endangered species. Male buffalo are among the most dangerous animals in Africa. Their horns are juxtaposed, forming a formidable weapon. This animal kills about 200 people every year.
