#WrongAsian: After Ali Wong’s divorce news, the magazine apologizes for the wrong photo

Media outlets have been criticized for the photos they used to report on comedian Ali Wong’s divorce. Now, a magazine is apologizing.

Parade magazine issued an apology Wednesday to the Asian-American comedian and her husband, Justin Hakuta, after misidentifying Hakuta as his former co-star Randall Park in a photo. Picture of the two, from the 2019 movie “Always I Can”, accompanied by an article stating that Wong and Hakuta are divorced after eight years together.

For years, the “Don’t Wong” star has shared jokes and stories about her relationship with Hakuta, a Harvard Business School graduate and Fulbright scholar. The couple has two children: Mari, born in 2015, and Nikki, born in 2017.

MSN was also criticized for using Park’s photo instead of Hakuta’s. A spokesman for MSN’s parent company, Microsoft, did not immediately respond to NBC News’ request for comment.

After the controversy, people retweeted the hashtag “WrongAsian” on Twitter and pointed out the incident.

Kirstin Chen, author of “Fake Goods,” tweeted that she had a similar experience.

“A book expert has just left a review for my book on a commercial website that is clearly about a book by another Asian female author,” Chen wrote in a blog post. tweetadded that she was tired of being “flattened, belittled, diminished.”
