Day and night dedicated to preserving Son Tra coastal coral reefs, carrying on a mission to rescue sea turtles and dolphins

Sasa Marine Life Rescue Center is a non-profit organizationn started working in 2016, but only works silently. Until 2018, the new group members used the name Sasa to operate until now. The group’s motto is “Do not catch or kill anything from the sea”.

Mr. Le Chien, born in 1984, is the leader of the group who specializes in marine biology research. A native of Hanoi, Mr. Chien moved to Da Nang to work for an NGO. However, when he decided to focus on Sasa, he quit a high-paying job to devote himself fully to the marine life rescue team. The other members of the group are also people with diving skills and knowledge of marine life.

The daily work of the members of Sasa is focused on the conservation of the coastal coral reefs of Son Tra. Team leader Sasa shared with Nhan Dan newspaper: “The work of conserving and creating more coral reefs gives me and my brothers a lot of emotions. The methods of research, discovery and reference from foreign experts when put in to save corals have brought about satisfactory results.”

The original number of members of the group was only 6 people. Currently, members of Sasa also combine with other groups to be able to save more sea creatures. “Members of the Sasa marine life rescue team come from many different professions and ages. Underwater communication and risk management skills are vital. Therefore, in order to work together, the whole team must have a love for the job to be able to go together.”group leader Le Chien expressed.

In addition, members of Sasa regularly rescue and re-release into the wild sea turtles and dolphins. It is known that Sasa successfully rescues 20 cases of dolphins in distress per year on average, with a survival rate of about 20-25%. The group’s area of activity is not only in Da Nang but also in Cu Lao Cham, Phu Quoc, Nha Trang, and Ca Mau.

Funding to maintain the operation comes from the group members themselves, volunteering to contribute. However, the amount of money to save marine life is not small, for example, the successful rescue of turtles because of eating nets and plastic (named Olive by the group), every day costs nearly 200,000 VND to eat, including 1 kg. squid and 1 kg of fish; The water tank must also be changed every day to heal the turtles. During 5 months of treatment, the group spent more than 300 million VND for the poor turtle.

Happiest is that in the past 4 years, Sasa has saved more than 100 turtles and dolphins. Although the amount of money they contributed to the operation was “several billion dong”, the group’s location had to be moved to “the beach” due to lack of funds, but the members were still very optimistic. Appearing on VTV’s Kindness, their love for the ocean is highlighted more and more.
