Magic psychological techniques help founder Yum Brands change his life, turn the company into a billion-dollar giant

*The article is shared by former CEO of Yum Brands – David Novak:

Reaching your goals for success depends a lot on whether you believe you are capable or not.

Even as the former CEO and co-founder of the billion-dollar company Yum Brands (which owns hit brands like Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, KFC …), I still have times when I wonder: Am I is it possible?

Luckily, I’ve adopted a few tips to cultivate confidence in myself. One of the most effective ways is to curb the positive thoughts that are eroding your trust.

“Reframing” is a psychological technique whereby we determine how we see a situation or experience and change that perspective. This is not about daydreaming or denying your feelings. Emotions can influence a lot of important things in life, so everyone wants to acknowledge it.

The goal of the “reframing” technique is to find a more productive and positive way of thinking.

“No” to “not yet” changed my life

A simple trick that I often use is to replace the word “no” with “not yet”. For example, when I built Yum, I wanted it to be a global giant. However, at that time, a voice kept ringing in my head: “The company will not succeed”.

One day, I decided to change this negative mindset by saying to myself, “We’re still not a successful company.” Every time I fail or feel depressed, lose motivation, I repeat the above sentence to myself.

“Yet” (not yet) is the 3 letters that changed my life, helped me to believe in myself and dare to take risks with business ideas. After applying the above strategy, I was confident enough to bet on the global expansion strategy and it paid off. Eventually, Yum also became the largest restaurant company in the world.

How to change negative thinking

By adding “not yet,” you turn what could have been the end into the beginning of a new chapter.

Try the following exercise:

Think about what’s out of your comfort zone

Choose anything you’re not sure you can do. It could be running a marathon. Or, if you’re a stay-at-home person or a plane-hater, it could be a trip around the world.

“Frame” on a sentence containing the word “can’t” or “no”

For example, “I can’t run a marathon” or “I can’t go to Australia”. Then say it out loud to yourself.

Add “not yet” to the sentence

Say: “I can’t run a marathon yet” or “I can’t go to Australia yet”.

Ask yourself: “What do I need to learn, practice, or do to make it happen?”

You can write down as many things as you can. For example, with running a marathon, you can plan to get up early and go for a brisk walk for a few kilometers and then increase it over time. As for the trip, you should research tips to relax while sitting on the plane.

When having a challenging thought about starting something new, remember to apply this method. It can help you think in new ways and achieve things you’ve never achieved before.
