Risk of diabetes after Covid-19

The team at Systems of Care health St.Louis (USA) reviewed the medical records of more than 180,000 patients who recovered from Covid-19 after 1 month, compared with about 8 million people who did not. infected with Covid-19 used the St.Louis Healthcare System before and after the pandemic.

The results show that, compared with people without Covid-19, people infected with Covid-19 have a higher risk of developing the disease diabetes higher than 40% within 1 year of infection. Most of the cases detected are type 2 diabetes – patients experience insulin resistance, not producing enough insulin.

The more severe the Covid-19 infection, the higher the risk of diabetes. People infected with Covid-19 who are hospitalized are three times more likely to be at risk. People with mild disease and no pre-existing risk factors are also at risk of developing it diabetes higher than in uninfected individuals. Among mild cases, the study estimates that eight out of every 1,000 people will develop diabetes within a year of infection.

In addition, people with risk factors for type 2 diabetes such as high body mass index and obesity are twice as likely to develop the disease after being infected with Covid-19.

With the same research method as above, the previous group of authors also showed that Covid-19 increases the risk of kidney disease, heart failure and stroke.
