Beijing fell, Empress Dowager Tu Xi and the entire royal family had to leave the capital to seek refuge in Xi’an. While fleeing, because she was in a hurry, Empress Dowager Tu Hy did not have time to bring all her treasures, including a herbal pillow.

According to the book “Tu Hy Secret History”, a palace maid of Empress Dowager Tu Xi took advantage of the chaos to escape. However, this palace lady did not want to leave empty handed, so she brought Empress Dowager Tu’s pillow with the thought that the pillow had a fairly normal shape and would not be easily detected.

The palace maid escaped to her hometown of Xi’an, got married and lived there peacefully. Later, Empress Dowager Tu Hy returned to the palace but did not know the whereabouts of both the other palace maid and the pillow, only rumors that the palace maid was killed during the chaos, and the pillow was taken by Westerners. gone, so I just had to feel sorry for it.

It was not until her death that this palace lady revealed the truth about the pillow to her descendants.

Many years later, the Qing Dynasty collapsed, the old palace maid was still alive and kept the pillow of Empress Dowager Tu Hy, but did not dare to say that she had stolen the pillow. It was not until her death that she told the truth to her children and grandchildren, hoping that they would preserve the pillow as a family heirloom.

By 1964, that is 64 years after the pillow was stolen, the descendants of the former palace maid are now workers in a chemical factory. On one occasion, the child of this family saw an old and dirty pillow, so he decided to take it off to wash it, but suddenly noticed something unusual. Inside the pillow was not only herbs, but also a strange fabric cover. Slitting this cloth, this person found it has a total of 4 layers, 1 layer of red cloth, 1 layer of yellow cloth, 1 layer of oil paper and 1 layer of silk fabric. Inside, this person found 4 pearls the size of a longan, shiny and sparkling.

Recalling the words of the palace maiden in the past, her descendants believed that this was the treasure of Empress Dowager Tu Hy, so they paid tribute to the state. Later, experts confirmed that these 4 pearls were the night pearls that were once mounted on the phoenix crown of Empress Dowager Tu Xi.

Legend has it that the crown of Empress Dowager Tu Hy has 9 phoenixes attached, each of which holds a night pearl. But when Empress Dowager Tu Xi died in 1908, there were only 5 night pearls left in her crown, of which the largest was put into her mouth. As it turned out, the remaining 4 were in the pillow that the palace maid had stolen.

In 1928, Ton Dien Anh took his army to steal the tomb of Empress Dowager Tu Hy, robbing all precious treasures in the mausoleum. The body of Empress Dowager Tu Hy was also violated, her mouth was pry open to get jade and then thrown aside. Later, Ton Dien Anh gave that pearl to Tong My Linh to win the heart of Chiang Kai-shek, and finally returned to the hands of American billionaire John D. Rockefeller and is now kept in a museum.

Thus, 5 of the 9 night pearls of Empress Dowager Tu Hy have been found, while the remaining 4 are still wandering in the human world with unknown whereabouts.

According to historical records, Queen Empress Dowager Tu Hy’s night pearls were valuable, each weighing about 787.28 carats (more than 157 grams). The largest nightingale pearl was valued at nearly 11 million taels of silver, which is now more than 800 million yuan (more than 2,800 billion dong).
