ISS station flies over 98 m high rocket

AmericaFlying at an altitude of more than 400 km above Earth, the International Space Station (ISS) looks like a faint light in the sky in a NASA rocket image.

Photographer Joel Kowsky photographed the rocket booster during NASA’s Artemis 1 lunar mission – the Space Launch System (SLS) – on Launchpad 39B at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on April 8. In the sky, the faint light streaking past is the International Space Station (ISS). The ISS station moves at about 28,000 km/h at an altitude of more than 400 km. The station completes one orbit around the Earth every 90 minutes.

In the photo, the SLS rocket is a bit difficult to recognize because it is obscured by the bright lights of the launch pad. However, the vibrant sky colors from deep orange pink to dark blue still make the photo breathtaking. SLS rocket is 98 m high, weighs about 2.5 million kg. When launched, the rocket will generate a thrust of 39 million newtons.

NASA put the SLS rocket on the launch pad in March for a critical countdown and fueling test ahead of the Artemis 1 mission, scheduled for later this year. The trial started on April 1, but it has not gone smoothly. NASA tried to fuel the rocket three times, but each time had to cancel due to technical problems, most recently due to a faulty valve in the launch tower.

Artemis 1 is an unmanned test mission in which the Orion spacecraft containing experimental sets and dummies will launch into space and then fly around the Moon. If the flight goes well, NASA will launch the first crewed SLS rocket in 2024 on the Artemis 2 mission, which is also expected to orbit the Moon. The next mission, Artemis 3, will land astronauts near the Moon’s south pole in 2025 or 2026.
