North Korea tests new type of guided missile

North Korea tested a missile that is said to improve the “combat effectiveness of tactical nuclear weapons” under the supervision of Kim Jong-un.

Central news agency North Korea KCNA today said the leader Kim Jong-un oversaw a test of a guided missile that could boost the country’s nuclear capabilities. The missile’s parameters are not disclosed.

“The new type of tactical guided weapon plays a very significant role, helping to improve the firepower of front-line long-range artillery units as well as the combat effectiveness of tactical nuclear weapons. Leader Kim Jong- un instructed the research team on the plan to strengthen the military capacity and nuclear combat force,” KCNA said.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said two projectiles were launched from Hamhung province, northeastern North Korea, last night. They flew 110 km, reached a maximum altitude of 25 km and a speed of more than 4,900 km / h, four times the sound, before plunging into the sea.

Pictures released by North Korea show Kim Jong-un watching the test launch with binoculars, before smiling and celebrating with North Korean military officers.

Ankit Panda, an expert from the US-based Carnegie Foundation for International Peace, said it could be North Korea’s short-range ballistic missile and first tactical nuclear weapon deployment system.

The test took place a day after the 110th anniversary of the birth of late leader Kim Il-sung, the grandfather of leader Kim Jong-un. North Korea this year does not hold a military parade, but only civilian parades and concerts at Kim Il Sung Square in the capital Pyongyang. The city also held fireworks near the river on the night of April 15.

In the early months of this year, North Korea has continuously tested weapons, including the first test launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile since 2017. South Korean intelligence also discovered that North Korea has built an underground bunker. at the Punggye-ri nuclear test facility, which was partially dismantled after the June 2018 summit between Kim and former US President Donald Trump.

Leader Kim Jong-un said recently that he no longer felt bound by the moratorium on nuclear weapons testing, as denuclearization talks with the United States stalled.
