Archaeologists will open the lid of the mysterious coffin below Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris discovered during the rebuilding of the ancient tower that was destroyed by fire.

In 2019, a great fire burned down the famous Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, which shocked the world. The 12th-century church is one of the oldest examples of French Gothic architecture, having been engulfed in flames.

During the rebuilding process, archaeologists discovered many valuable antiques, including a mysterious lead coffin in good condition.

The intact coffin was buried at a depth of 20 meters, among the piles of bricks of the 19th century heating system. However, according to experts, the mysterious coffin dates back to the 14th century. was an extremely rare burial practice at the time.

Using an endoscope, the scientists examined the inside of the coffin, revealing a human skeleton, a pillow made of leaves, hair, cloth and some unidentified objects.

The coffin is 1.95 meters long and 80 centimeters wide, being stored in a secure location. Authorities will soon transfer it to the Forensic Institute in the southwestern French city of Toulouse.

Christophe Besnier, head of the archaeological team, said the coffin, located in the mound with 14th-century furniture, was actually a coffin from the Middle Ages.

Scientists plan to open the coffin as soon as possible to learn and study more about the gender, health status of the person before death and the social status of the deceased. Based on the location and burial style, they assumed that the deceased belonged to the aristocracy.

If confirmed, the case would make it a spectacular find, according to experts.

Excavations also revealed a pit just below the church floor, likely built around 1230, when Notre Dame was being built.

The coffin is not the only notable discovery in Notre-Dame. Archaeologists have unearthed a treasure trove of statues, sculptures, tombs and fragments of an original screen dating from the 13th century.
