Pad Man is a 2018 film based on the true story of Arunachalam Muruganantham – An Indian man invented cheap tampons for women, contributing to eradicating menstrual stigma and injustices for women in his country.

Pad Man Movie:

Male lead Lakshmikant Chauhan (played by Akshay Kumar) in Pad Man

From the shock of seeing his wife use a rag to absorb menstrual blood…

In India, women on the day of “falling off strawberries” will have to be isolated from their family, husband and children, living alone in a hut far away from home. This is considered the custom of this country.

And all the confusion began to appear when Chauhan brought rice to his wife Gayatri (played by Radhika Apte) during the days when she had to “live separately” because of her period.

The sight of Gayatri drying a rag used to absorb menstrual blood made Chauhan fall into a state of shock. The rag that she uses, people don’t even use to clean the bike anymore.

The rag that Gayatri used in his “coming months”

Looking at the cloth with holes in it, old and dry, Chauhan didn’t say no, took his car to find and buy his wife a pack of tampons. But then, he was shocked a second time when he understood why Gayatri had to use that rag.

A pack of tampons in India cost Rs 55, equal to half a month’s salary of Chauhan at that time. But as a man who loves his wife, he still decided to borrow money to buy her a pack of tampons.

As a result, Gayatri was not only unhappy, but also scolded her husband for a match and then forced him to return this item.

Pad Man Movie:

Gayatri was visibly upset when her husband brought home a pack of tampons that cost half a month’s living expenses

Holding a pack of tampons in his hand, Chauhan constantly wondered why this “debt” was so expensive. So instead of returning it, he tore off a tampon, to see if it was made of diamonds or crocodile skin, which was so expensive.

To the desire to produce cheap sanitary napkins for women

After realizing that tampons appeared to be made of cotton, Chauhan happily bought cotton, fabric and some glue to make handmade tampons for his wife. This time, Gayatri was holding a tampon in her hand and was overjoyed.

But the next day, when he brought rice to his wife, Chauhan still found her drying the rags and the tampons he made lying in the trash. Turns out, they’re useless. The tampons Chauhan made made Gayatri’s bed sheet dyed red.

Pad Man Movie:

Chauhan is upset when the tampons he makes are completely useless

Chauhan continued to experiment with other types of cotton, fabrics, and glues. But there was no one to help him try it out and comment. Gayatri even left his mother’s house completely because he thought he was a pervert. She thought”No man likes to learn about a woman’s menstrual cycle“.

His wife can leave, but Chauhan is determined not to give up his desire to produce cheap tampons for women. Despite everyone’s scrutiny and objections, Chauhan bought his own underwear, poured ketchup on his tampons, and cycled around. After having to jump into the river many times because the ketchup spilled and dyed his pants red, Chauhan also made a sanitary pad with excellent absorbency.

At the end of the film, Chauhan joined Shark Tank, successfully raising capital of 200 million Rupees to open a factory to produce cheap sanitary napkins for women.

Pad Man Movie:

After many heartaches and failures, Chauhan also fulfilled his dream of producing cheap sanitary napkins for women.

One man’s success helped free millions of Indian women from the stigma of menstruation as dirty.

Pad Man ends with the moment Gayatri returns to Chauhan after she realizes he has done a wonderful thing, not only for herself but also for other women.

After less than 2 years of establishment, women in 27/29 states of India can now use monthly sanitary napkins, instead of rags.

Pad Man does not exaggerate or exaggerate Chauhan’s grandfather as in fact, Arunachalam Muruganantham has received many awards, including the title of Padma Shri for outstanding citizen of India. His extraordinary life story from his tampon was also captured in a 2013 documentary called “Menstrual Man”. In 2014, TIME magazine listed him as one of the “100 most influential people in the world”.

Pad Man Movie:

Mr. Arunachalam Muruganantham

Inspired by Muruganantham’s tenacity and perseverance, Chitransh Saxena (26 years old), another guy, founded MyPad Bank, an NGO that distributes sanitary napkins to impoverished women in rural areas. Bareilly, a city in Uttar Pradesh (India).

Thanks to the success of Muruganantham and the film Pad Man, the stigma and prejudice against women in India has somewhat decreased.

Currently, tampons have been widely used in 27/29 states of India. Women also almost no longer have to be isolated when the red light comes, except for a few states that are not yet developed.
