Located in the west of Dien Chau district, bordering Yen Thanh district, quite far from the district center, Dien Thap commune has a more spacious appearance than many other towns and cities. Even just asking, any local people know this village with the nickname “Jewish” (referring to intelligence) of Nghe An.

It is not difficult to see high-rise buildings and villas in Dien Thap

On both sides of the road leading to the commune are rows of adjacent villas, close together, it is not difficult to see supercars gliding on the street. In front of the houses on the street is a row of trucks waiting to “eat” goods exported to Laos, including items such as aluminum and plastic products, blankets, mats, cushions, iron, steel… extremely busy.

Ms. Chu Thi Khuyen – Chairman of Dien Thap Commune People’s Committee – said that thanks to knowing how to do business, hundreds of people in Dien Thap village have become giants, two-thirds of the households build high-rise buildings and many billion-dollar villas. In which many expensive cars, even many billions of dong, are also owned by the giants of this region.

Reported in 2017 – 2018, hamlet 5 has 246 households, almost every house has cars and villas. The poverty rate of the commune is only 2.03%. These cases mainly fall in households with disabled, elderly and mentally ill people. According to sociologists and economic experts, Dien Thap is one of the richest villages in Vietnam.

But few people know that, before becoming a “billionaire village”, Dien Thap village used to be one of the poorest areas of Nghe An province.

Get rich by trading junk

Dien Thap before 1900 used to be an empty field area, flooded all year round, people mostly farming. Each family has a few acres of contracted fields, so their life is poor, and the per capita income is the lowest in the district. In addition to farming, people also have a job of casting bronze, taking advantage of their leisure days.

According to local people, Dien Thap commune used to have a traditional bronze casting profession. In order to have production materials, people buy themselves bicycles, go to buy junk everywhere, they even go to Laos. During their trips, they take advantage of buying many other things such as duck feathers, broken plastic, packaging, bottles, etc. to sell to scrap processing factories to earn extra income.

At that time, the image of people riding bicycles to buy junk in the early morning, children passing Styrofoam boxes behind the car, going to get ice cream to sell and exchange for junk… was too familiar to the people here. Since then, Dien Thap is also known as “scrap village”.

At that time, thanks to the cheap price of scrap in Laos, the source of goods was high, but the merchants won big. At first, they only bought small, but then people bought trucks to carry, some people gathered at large collection yards and then moved back gradually. After that, thanks to being sensitive to the times, the scrap trade here had a strong change. Each shipment of scrap from Laos is gathered at Dien Hong’s agents (a neighboring commune). After sorting and recycling, the scrap is brought back to Laos and sold at a high price.

People are loaded with goods to prepare for the trip to Laos

Based on market demand, traders know what they have to sell. From aluminum, plastic, household appliances, refrigeration, blankets, cushions, iron, steel, farm tools… everything is sold. Many people here even “migrate” to Laos to facilitate business, “settle down” in your country from a few months to a few years, make money to buy land, build housing agents. Factory in Laos, the rest is sent to family in the countryside.According to statistics, Dien Thap commune currently has nearly 1,400 laborers working in Laos with the age range from 20 to 50.

Starting in 2000, the people of Dien Thap raced to build houses and villas, surprising people around the area. In just a short time, the commune took on a completely new face. The villas are located close together into a long street along the center of the commune. Gradually, Dien Thap grew rapidly and became one of the richest communes in Nghe An province.

In particular, despite being rich, there are no social evils in Dien Thap. From petty theft, gambling for money to drugs, smuggling… almost none for decades. Despite living in a material-sufficient environment, Dien Thap’s children still promote thrift, industriousness, and nurture the will to advance. Dien Thap is a commune that is always in the top of the list in terms of the percentage of students passing university and college compared to other communes in the district. Every year, this commune has about 30 children who pass universities across the country.
