Visit the place where the world’s largest statue of Guan Yin Buddha is located

As it turned out, the “shadow” that Justin Velgus was referring to was the Sendai Daikannon (Giant Kannon Goddess) statue, located in Daikanmitsuji temple.
The statue’s full name is Sendai Tendoohyakue Daikannon. This is considered a representative image of the Bodhisattva (Goddess of compassion) in Japanese Buddhist culture.
According to Atlasobscura, Sendai Daikannon was once rated as the world’s tallest statue in 1991 (when it was newly inaugurated) with a height of more than 100 meters, located on the top of a hill overlooking Sendai city (population 1 million) in the Tōhoku region of Japan. This statue currently ranks as the 5th tallest statue in the world, but is still the tallest goddess statue in Japan.
Because of such a height, on “clear skies” days, you can clearly see the statue standing in any position in the city. In particular, the scene of the white statue standing out against the blue sky makes people feel as if the “Bodhisattva has appeared”.
The most special thing, this statue is not “empty” inside but also contains many surprises that make visitors amazed. And not only massive in size, this statue also has religious and cultural significance because Sendai Daikannon represents the Bodhisattva – a deity who represents the Japanese Buddhist concept of compassion.
Inside the statue is like a museum. Right at the entrance, on the bottom floor, you immediately admire 33 different sculptures representing 33 shapes of Bodhisattva. Opposite are 12 statues of mascots representing the 12 zodiac animals according to Chinese astrology.

The statue has 12 floors with an elevator system moving to the top floor, but many visitors choose to walk through each step of the stairs to fully appreciate the beauty of this place.
Many visitors choose to walk up the stairs in the statue instead of traveling by elevator.
When you reach the top floor, you will be able to see the whole beautiful scenery of Sendai city through the small windows. You can even see the whole Pacific Ocean on clear days.
