After usurping the throne, why did Zhu Di kill all the concubines in the harem?

In the feudal period, it was not uncommon for rebel forces to compete for each other’s throne. We can know through a lot of historical documents, movies or classic works like “Three Kingdoms”. In which, it must be mentioned that during the Ming Dynasty, Zhu Di (Minh Thanh To) overthrew his nephew Emperor Minghui and ascended the throne in 1402.

However, what surprised everyone was that when Zhou Di took the throne, he killed all the concubines in the harem. What is the truth behind?

Zhu Di, also known as Minh Thanh To, was the third emperor of the Ming Dynasty. In 1402, he led his army to attack Nanjing to overthrow his grandson, Chu Doan Van (Emperor Minh Hue), the true name of Minh Thai To Chu Nguyen Chuong. Because when Zhou Yunwen ascended the throne, there were actions that threatened Zhu Di’s power, so he began to act to overthrow his nephew.

After winning the throne, Zhu Di did not hesitate to kill all his nephew’s harem for the following reasons.

Firstly, Chu Di believes that this harem is the loyal servants of Zhou Doan Van. Although he won and claimed the throne, he still needed to be on the lookout for forces close to his grandson. Although the harem is all female, it is still one of the forces that can be strongly linked with the armed forces outside. If he was not careful, he could completely be betrayed by the harem loyal to the old emperor.

Second, Zhu Di knew that the identity of the emperor’s concubines were from famous and influential families. The concubines in the harem loyal to Zhou Yunwen might still rely on the influence and potential of the family to help the emperor overthrow him. This worry of Zhu Di was very well-founded, when at the beginning of his battle for the throne, he faced many disadvantages.

Third, the last reason is because Zhu Di ascended the throne through a civil war over his nephew’s throne and was unpopular. Therefore, Zhou Di felt that appearing in front of his grandson’s harem would be very embarrassing and might be talked about. Zhou Di chose to kill Zhou Yunwen’s harem so that he could re-establish his dynasty and palace.

In order to be able to easily rule, after winning the throne from his nephew, Minh Thanh To Chu Di not only killed all of Chu Doan Van’s harem, but also murdered famous loyalists like Phuong Hieu Nhu, Prince Cheng… and many other mandarins with a large scale of purge. Zhu Di took action against all the mandarins of the same clan if they did not obey him.

In particular, Phuong Hieu Nhu was also “retired from ten clans”, his wife and daughter were sent into the army as slaves, three or four later generations were all prostitutes. It was not until the Orthodox year that they were pardoned.

It can be said that Minh Thanh To was a cruel emperor. Anyone he sees as a threat to his throne will not hesitate to “exfoliate the grass” to avoid future consequences. This emperor directly killed from the weak and weak concubines in the harem to the meritorious and talented military gods.
