Authorities say shooting at South Carolina club left 9 people injured

HAMPTON, SC – Authorities in South Carolina say they are investigating a shooting at a club in Hampton County early Sunday morning that left at least nine people injured. This is the second mass shooting in the state in as many days.

State Law Enforcement said in an email there were no reports of deaths in the Easter morning shooting at the Hampton County club. No information was immediately available on the severity of the injuries.

SLED said it was asked by the Hampton County Sheriff’s Office to investigate. Hampton County is about 80 miles (about 129 km) west of Charleston.

The shooting came a day after gunfire broke out at a busy shopping center in the state capital of Columbia. WH Police Chief “Skip” Holbrook said nine people were shot and five injured as they tried to flee the scene at the Columbiana Center. The victims ranged in age from 15 to 73.

The Columbia Police Department announced the arrest of 22-year-old Jewayne M. Price, one of three people initially detained by law enforcement in connection with the mall shooting. Price is scheduled to have a hearing at 2 p.m. Sunday on charges of unlawfully carrying a pistol. It was not immediately known if Price had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

Police said the 73-year-old victim continues to receive medical treatment, but other victims have been discharged or will be released shortly.

“We don’t believe this is random,” Holbrook said. “We believe they knew each other and something led to the shooting.”
