Obsessed with 2 surgeries to remove tumors with difficult positions and unexpected endings

Every day, Ms. Nguyen Thu Ha (40 years old, Hanoi) starts a new day at 5am, exercises, prepares breakfast for her family, then goes to work. She boasted: “The whole day, I kept going back and forth about the same things, but the day was over. But I felt very happy and at peace myself”.

In order to have the current positive mindset and lifestyle, Ms. Ha has experienced quite a shock in her life. As a single mother of 2 children, that woman is extremely strong and courageous when going through so many things.

She said, in 2019 during the annual health check of the agency, after taking an X-ray, the doctor said: “There is a problem with my lungs, it is suspected that it is tuberculosis, so I suggest going to the hospital for examination”. Ms. Ha immediately went to the hospital for a general check-up but there were no results. She was assigned to periodically monitor every 2-3 months.

In September 2021, when Hanoi ended the social distancing period due to the COVID-19 epidemic, Ms. Ha continued to check again. At that time, she was discovered that the lesion was necrotic, attached to the chest wall. The doctor assigned to the hospital to wait for surgery, the tests were negative. It wasn’t until a trans-wall biopsy did the cells come out Cancer lung stage 1B.

When I heard the doctor tell me the news, I was very surprised that I heard wrong. It felt like a free fall, not knowing what to do, without a loved one beside me. Fortunately, a patient’s family member in the same room came over to pat on the shoulder to encourage treatment.

I lay there, tears streaming down my face but biting my lips, not daring to cry out loud. It took me about half an hour before I started texting and calling home to my family and loved ones, determining the fighting spirit, accepting everything that happens no matter what.“, that strong woman finally accepted everything.

Ms. Ha decided to fight the disease strongly.

After receiving the information, Ha’s family members were even more shocked and confused than her. They feel sorry for the woman who carries so much hardship for her family, who is now seriously ill and is fighting alone at the hospital.

Therefore, Ms. Ha has to be even more stable so that her family members can feel secure.

Haunting days in the hospital

The war has begun! The doctor assigned to quickly take a Pet CT (Diagnosis and monitor for treatment of diseases such as cancer – PV) to see where the cancer had metastasized before surgery.

Pet CT scan showed 2 small but difficult lymph nodes: 1 on the vena cava and 1 between the aorta and bronchial tubes. The doctor appointed a brake surgery and had to have 2 surgeries. But afraid of pain, partly because she thought the surgery would take a long time to heal, she asked the doctor for laparoscopic surgery to recover quickly and signed a commitment to take responsibility.

So, her two surgeries were conducted simultaneously: the left surgery removed the lymph nodes for a quick biopsy, then turned negative to the right surgery to remove the necrotic lung. After a total of 5 hours, 2 surgeries were successful, she was taken to the emergency room.

After the surgery, I thought everything would be fine because only a few hours later she could eat porridge and drink milk. “But at night, I started to have difficulty breathing, I couldn’t stand it, I had to call the doctor for oxygen and at 5am I was transferred to the postoperative room because of respiratory failure, my limbs seemed to no longer feel anything.

Going down there for 5 days, the first 2 days I fell asleep, I didn’t know anything, all functions were mechanical with infusion; It wasn’t until the 3rd day that I started to wake up and look around. When I tried to call home, everyone breathed a sigh of relief because I had regained consciousness.

Alone in a room, no relatives around, only machines of all kinds, a day nebulizing 8 times each time 4 drugs, really makes me panic every time I wake up, I have to take it every 5 am. arterial blood for testing. Sometimes the doctor has to work a few times to get the blood.”Ha shivered as she recalled.

Recalling the days in the hospital, Ms. Ha shivered not thinking that she could make it through.

After that, because she could not function on her own, she needed someone to support her. But since the surgery, she spoke very weakly, not everyone could hear.

The sound of the machines around was beeping all day and night, and every movement or heart palpitations, the alarm immediately, the nurse ran in right away… those obsessions helped her try to recover quickly, so as not to use those machines. She practiced each thing, learned to swallow water, then ate pureed porridge and asked the doctor to remove the esophageal tube.

Just like that, her health gradually became more stable, her high blood pressure for many days finally dropped from 180 to 150-160. On the 4th day, the ventilator was removed, and on the 5th day, the doctor returned to the old department for monitoring.

In the following days, she was taken care of by her family for one day and then they returned, the rest she learned to walk, eat and drink by herself. She had more gastric reflux, then the doctor gave her medicine and taught her to breathe. A week later, she was discharged from the hospital.

Lifestyle change and unexpected ending

At home, Ms. Ha was shared by everyone about a “green” diet to help her body recover faster. Her health then improved every day; blood pressure, pulse are all lowered to the standard level; The condition of gastric reflux decreased completely and after the 2nd course of chemotherapy, she did not have to take medication to treat reflux anymore.

Ms. Ha gives preference to plant foods rather than animal meats. She also adjusted her lifestyle to be more scientific and reasonable with her health status.

Fruit juices, meals with lots of green vegetables are always her first choice.

After undergoing chemotherapy in October 2021 and completing 4 cycles of chemotherapy, Ms. Ha currently does not have to be treated or taken any more drugs, except for some vitamins prescribed by the doctor in batches.

Since being ill, I have understood more and more the importance of adjusting my diet, exercising, and living a healthy life. I eat a lot of green vegetables and fruits every day. I add more protein from plants instead of from animals like before.

Mentally, I am always optimistic, follow the doctor’s orders, and at the same time learn about health care methods that are suitable for my own conditions and circumstances to apply. I live peacefully, without anger, without worrying too much about illness. How much fatigue, discomfort after surgery or chemotherapy I can easily overcome and feel much more excited.“, shared Ha.
