Russia declares “totally occupied” Mariupol

“The only chance to save their lives is to voluntarily lay down their arms and surrender,” said Igor Konashenkov, a spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry. According to ReutersKonashenkov said about 1,464 Ukrainian servicemen surrendered “during the liberation of Mariupol”.

The Russian Defense Ministry believes that Ukrainian forces fighting in Mariupol will be guaranteed their lives if they lower their weapons at 6 o’clock (local time) on April 17.

Senior Lieutenant General Mikhail Mizintsev, director of Russia’s National Center for Defense Management, said: “We guarantee that whoever lays down their weapons will be spared their lives. Under the proposed deal, the forces are entrenched in the steel plant. Azovstal will leave from 6-13 o’clock (local time) without weapons or ammunition.”

News agency TASS Mizintsev quoted Mizintsev as saying that Moscow’s offer stemmed from the “terrible situation” at the Azovstal plant, as well as “pure humanitarian principles”. The Kiev side has not yet responded to the above proposal.

Information that Russia captured Mariupol has not been independently verified. If it is true that Russia claims, this will be the first major city of Ukraine they captured after conducting a “special military operation” in Ukraine from February 24.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said: “The situation is very difficult right now in Mariupol. Our soldiers are surrounded, the wounded are also cordoned off. A humanitarian crisis is happening… However… , these people are defending themselves.”

Speaking online, Mr. Zelensky accused Russia of trying to wipe out the city’s inhabitants but did not address Moscow’s claim to control of Mariupol.

Zelensky threatened to withdraw from peace talks with Russia if Ukrainian soldiers trapped in the port city were killed. The Ukrainian president also warned that the world should prepare “in some way” for the possibility that Russia could use nuclear weapons, but did not provide evidence to support this claim.
