The governor of Saint Petersburg said that General Vladimir Frolov, deputy commander of Russia’s 8th Army, was killed during a military operation in Ukraine.
The funeral of Major General Vladimir Frolov was held according to military rites at the Serafimovsky cemetery in the city of Saint Petersburg. Russia yesterday.
“Today we bid farewell to a hero. Vladimir Petrovich Frolov died fighting the nationalists in Ukraine. He sacrificed his life so that the women, children and elderly people in Donbass no longer had to hear the sound of bombs exploding and fear for their lives,” Saint Petersburg governor Alexander Beglov said at the funeral.
The Russian Defense Ministry has not commented on this information.
Major General Frolov is the deputy commander of the 8th Combined Army Group of the Southern Military District, one of the main units participating in Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine. This is also considered the central force of the Southern Military District on the southern flank of Russia, protecting the territory from threats from the direction of Europe.
This is the second Russian general-level officer to be confirmed dead while fighting in Ukraine. In an update on the operation in early March, Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed that an army general had died in action in Ukraine, but did not identify himself. The Russian Airborne Federation previously said that Major General Andrey Sukhovetsky, commander of the 7th Airborne Division, was killed by a Ukrainian sniper in late February.
After withdrawing from northern Ukraine earlier this month, Russia is regrouping in the east, leading to the risk of major fighting in the Donbass region. If Russia can control the Donbass, where the separatists already control parts of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, Russia will be able to establish a strong southern corridor, connecting the port city of Mariupol to the Crimean peninsula.
