Major General Frolov is the deputy commander of the 8th Combined Army Group of the Southern Military District, one of the main units participating in Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine. After withdrawing from northern Ukraine earlier this month, Russia is regrouping in the east, leading to the risk of major fighting in the Donbass region. If Russia can control the Donbass, where the separatists already control parts of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, Russia will be able to establish a strong southern corridor, connecting the port city of Mariupol to the Crimean peninsula.
