US President Biden will welcome ASEAN leaders in May

The conference was originally scheduled to take place at the end of March, but had to be pushed back. In a statement released, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said the summit “will demonstrate the United States’ enduring commitment to ASEAN”.

“A top priority of the Biden-Harris administration is to be a strong and reliable partner for Southeast Asia,” the statement said.

The US said the conference is expected to take place from May 12-13.

The United States has always affirmed that strengthening ties with Asia is a foreign policy priority.

On March 29, when he received Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the White House, President Biden said he wanted to make sure the region was “free and open”.

Last October, the US leader attended an online summit with ASEAN leaders. At that time, Ms. Psaki said that Mr. Biden had announced many initiatives to expand US participation with ASEAN in issues such as dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and economic growth.

The new White House statement did not say whether the leader of Myanmar would attend.
