On April 18, Reuters news agency cited a study conducted in March 2022 on 2,100 people on the island of Java that showed that 99% of people had COVID-19 antibodies. This rate is a combination of vaccine antibodies and previous infection. About 150 million people live on this island.

Epidemiologist Pandu Riono at the University of Indonesia, who conducted the survey with the Ministry of Health, said on April 18 that antibody levels in the latest study were higher thanks to a broader vaccination campaign.

Before that, a study in December 2021 of 22,000 people nationwide showed that 86% of Indonesians had antibodies.

Indonesia’s daily number of new COVID-19 cases has decreased significantly since a spike in February 2022 due to the Omicron variant. About 60% of Indonesia’s 270 million people have been vaccinated against COVID-19.

Mr. Pandu suggested that stronger antibodies formed in more people could be responsible for the faster rate of Omicron-related infections falling.

According to the Jakarta Post, the number of new cases in Indonesia decreased to 607 cases on April 17, while the weekly number of cases fell to 9,300 cases, down from 15,000 cases the previous week.

Indonesia has recently eased many restrictive measures imposed to combat the COVID-19 epidemic. Among the measures to be eased are the exemption from quarantine for foreign visitors and the lifting of the ban on people returning to their hometowns during the Muslim Idul Fitri holiday, which is scheduled to begin on April 28. .

Recent UK data also shows that by mid-March 2022, up to 99% of adults in the country have antibodies against COVID-19.
