Ukraine completes EU membership questionnaire

Ihor Zhovkva, Deputy Head of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office, said Ukraine has completed a questionnaire that will be the starting point for the European Union to decide on membership.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen handed the questionnaire to Zelenskyy during her visit to Kyiv earlier this month, pledging to get off to a quicker start to the EU membership effort after Russia’s invasion .

“Today, I can say that the document has been completed by the Ukrainian side,” Zhovkva told Ukrainian public television on Sunday evening.

He added that the European Commission would need to make recommendations on Ukraine’s compliance with the necessary membership criteria.

Zhovkva added that Ukraine is expected to gain status as a candidate state to join the EU in June during the scheduled meeting of the European Council.

“Next, we will need to start the accession negotiations. And once we held those talks, we were able to talk about Ukraine’s full membership in the EU,” said Zhovkva.

LVIV, Ukraine – The regional military administration and mayor’s office said several missiles hit the western city early Monday.

Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovy said Russia had targeted the city with five missile strikes. Smoke could be seen rising above the city following the explosion at around 8:30 a.m. local time.

The exact targets are still unclear, but the explosions rocked the country’s safe haven during Russia’s war.

Lviv has become a refuge city for people fleeing fighting in central and eastern Ukraine, with more displaced Ukrainians continuing to arrive by train and car every day.

The city also serves as a hub for military and humanitarian supplies, as most equipment and goods are sent to Ukraine from the West via the Polish border some 40 kilometers away.
