Honda CR-V returns to the sales track with Mazda CX-5 when Hyundai Tucson sells high-priced “lost”

The C-class crossover segment in Vietnam is a “three horse” race between Mazda CX-5, Hyundai Tucson and Honda CR-V. These top three picks have always had a mixed bag of sales over the past few months.

Since upgrading to the new version and returning to domestic assembly, Honda CR-V has no longer really attractive to Vietnamese users as before. Partly because users do not like assembled cars, partly because the price of Honda CR-V has increased significantly compared to before.

And to stimulate user demand, dealers often launch incentive programs to directly reduce cash, give gifts and accessories to customers who buy cars. Typically, in March, customers who bought Honda CR-V cars received a discount of nearly VND 200 million, the rolling price was equivalent to the listed price, so sales showed signs of improvement.

According to a sales report from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), in March 2022, 991 Honda CR-V vehicles were delivered to domestic customers. By the end of the first quarter of 2022, the cumulative sales of Honda CR-V is 2,545 units leaving the dealer.

March sales of Honda CR-V were no longer far behind Mazda CX-5 as before, but gradually caught up. Accordingly, sales of Mazda CX-5 were 1,365 vehicles in March and at the end of the first quarter of this year, 3,635 vehicles left the dealership.

Meanwhile, the model that ranked third in sales last month was Hyundai Tucson with only 588 units sold and accumulated from the beginning of the year was 2,131 units to customers.

Currently, customers buying Hyundai Tucson will have to spend the highest “lost” money of 130 million VND. This is the highest purchase price difference in the Vietnamese market for an ordinary car model. Not only Tucson but even Hyundai’s Santa Fe is in a similar situation.

Due to a lack of supply, sales of Hyundai Tucson are much more modest than competitors in the same segment such as Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5. Even in March, Mitsubishi Outlander had better sales with 701 cars delivered to customers.

If the shortage of goods continues, Hyundai Tucson is expected to still have dismal sales even though people’s demand is still high. When the Hyundai Tucson is in short supply, the opportunity to jump up in the sales race will be for Honda CR-V, Mitsubishi Outlander…
