The MG sedan has a sporty design, spacious interior, comfortable equipment and many safety features, the cheapest price in the segment.

Introduced in Vietnam market in early March, MG5 positioned in the C-segment sedan segment, where there are formidable rivals such as Kia K3, Honda Civic, Mazda3, Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Altis. MG5 segment imported Thailand, along with Honda Civic and Toyota Altis.

MG5 has a young, angular design with many cutting lines to make it easy to identify the car. Large, aggressive grille with details linked to the side air vents. The highlight is on the 17-inch rims, simulating the tomahawk blade design.

The MG5 is 4,675 mm long, 1,842 mm wide, 1,480 mm high and has a wheelbase of 2,680 mm. Compared to the best-selling rival Kia K3 (4,640×1,800×1,450 mm) in Vietnam, the MG5 is 35 mm longer, 42 mm wider, 30 mm taller and has a 20 mm shorter wheelbase. The ground clearance of the MG5 is 138 mm, while the rival K3 is higher at 150 mm.

Similar to the exterior, the interior has a sporty design, a driver-oriented dashboard, and a spacious interior. Sports flat bottom steering wheel, integrated with many control keys. Sports front seats with weightless structure hug the driver, for a comfortable sitting position. The driver’s seat is 6-way power adjustable, while the passenger seat is manually adjustable.

Behind the dashboard is a 7-inch Virtual Cockpit screen, which displays full vehicle information and electronic assistance systems. The center console is geared towards the driver, accented with a 10-inch high-resolution touch screen for the infotainment system. The screen supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Automatic air conditioning supports fine dust filtration, as announced by MG.

Out of crowded Ho Chi Minh City, ice on Trung Luong highway, MG5 let the occupants feel good soundproofing compared to the segment. The suspension is smooth, swallowing up the ridges or bad roads. MG5 is equipped with MacPherson strut front suspension, torsion bar rear suspension. MG5 goes against the trend, sports cars are usually stiffer, but the shock absorbers of the MG C-size sedan are quite soft.

All 8 MG5s were almost full, with most of them 4 people each. The weather at this time is from 32-34 degrees Celsius, quite hot, making the air conditioner work at full capacity, reducing the cold to the maximum, the level at the 3rd line is enough to cool the whole car. There are vents for the rear seats, but the car has a sunroof, so the people sitting in the back seats don’t feel cool enough.

In the C-segment sedan segment, MG5 is the model with the smallest engine capacity equal to Mazda3, a 1.5-liter in-line 4-cylinder engine, Atkinson cycle to save fuel, capacity of 112 horsepower, maximum torque of 150 Nm. Compared to the Mazda3 1.5 Deluxe version, the capacity of the MG5 is 2 horsepower stronger, the maximum torque is also slightly higher than 4 Nm. The most formidable competitor is Kia K3 with engines from 1.6 to 2.0 with 5 versions, providing more options for Vietnamese customers.

The MG5 engine isn’t powerful enough with the sporty looks of a coupe-style sedan. The MG5 can be likened to a “tiger face but with a rabbit heart”.

Not only on highways but also on urban roads, the MG5’s 8-speed simulated CVT gearbox promotes smooth, smooth gear changes. However, the driver in an “offensive” style when passing another vehicle will feel unsatisfied if he does not switch to the sporty S gear. The British car brand equips the MG5 with three driving modes, including Urban, Normal and Dynamic. The three driving modes don’t make much of a difference. The surprise point lies in the EPS electric power steering system that helps to steer flexibly on gravel roads or highways.

With eye-catching appearance, spacious interior space, sufficient comfort, the MG5 also has many active and passive safety features. Safety features such as 360-degree camera with 3D display, electronic handbrake and automatic brake hold. Anti-lock braking system ABS, emergency brake support BA, electronic brake force distribution EBD. ESP electronic balance system, TCS traction control, CBC cornering control, XDS electronic differential, TPMS tire pressure warning. Hill start assist, blind spot warning, lane change assist, cross-traffic alert when reversing and rear collision warning. Vehicles with 6 airbags, ISOFIX child seat hooks, seat belt warning.

MG5 is sold in Vietnam with a Lux version priced at 579 million VND, the cheapest price in the segment, 20 million more than Kia K3 1.6 Deluze. However, the MG5 is imported from Thailand along with Honda Civic and Toyota Altis Therefore, they are not entitled to the policy of 50% reduction in upfront fees for domestically assembled cars.

The journey from Ho Chi Minh City to Ho Tram is not a short one, the MG5s one after another leaving the crowded city. In two days of experience, the MG5 revealed its advantages and disadvantages. The advantages of the MG5 lie in its sporty appearance, good soundproofing, soft suspension, light steering wheel thanks to electric power, cheap price and imported from Thailand. While the disadvantage of the car lies in the weak engine when passing, the air conditioner is not strong enough, the accelerator and brake pedal react slowly.

MG5 is suitable for young customers, first-time car owners and often used in urban areas. MG5 is like a new spice for the C-size sedan segment in Vietnam. To compete, the British car brand focuses on price and customer demand for imported cars.

MG is a British brand, currently owned by Shanghai Automobile Industry Company (SAIC), one of the four largest state-owned car manufacturers in China. MG products in Vietnam were previously imported from China, but now all three names, the newly launched ZS, HS and MG5 are imported from Thailand. Design and technological content are the advantages of MG5, but the new brand still needs time to prove.
