The reason more than 1,300 children in Ho Chi Minh City postponed their Covid-19 vaccine on the first day

Mr. Nguyen Hong Tam, deputy executive director of the Center for Disease Control of Ho Chi Minh City (HCDC), said that on April 16, Ho Chi Minh City began to vaccinate children aged 5-11 in some schools. As a result, on the first day, 10,434 6th grade children were vaccinated and 1,379 children delayed vaccination. These children have Covid-19 for less than 3 months or have contraindications (history of allergies, fever…).

On April 18, Ho Chi Minh City organized simultaneous injections for children aged 5-11 in 21 districts and Thu Duc city. Planned injection at 187 points with 433 injection tables and 42,526 children.

“Up to now, the good news is that the city has not recorded any child reactions or complications after injection,” Mr. Tam informed.

The HCDC recommends that children after receiving the Covid-19 vaccine must be monitored at the injection site for at least 30 minutes. If nothing is out of the ordinary, the child is allowed to return home. For at least the first 3 days, the child must be accompanied by an adult 24 hours a day. For 28 days after the injection, parents must closely monitor the child. If there are any strange signs, medical staff should be contacted promptly.

Today, hospitals also said that they have not received a list of children who have to delay in the first injection due to underlying and chronic diseases… HCDC said, maybe this is the number of children without a code. name, so parents need to proactively get the child’s identifier before going to the injection site.

In addition, inpatients who have received the 1st injection at the hospital, by the time of the 2nd injection, if they have been discharged home, parents can register for the injection in the community. If the child is still inpatient, the hospital will examine and decide whether the child should be vaccinated or postpone the next round.

Regarding the question of whether children are vaccinated against pneumococcal pneumonia, Japanese encephalitis, seasonal flu vaccine, … at the same time as the Covid-19 vaccine? According to the US CDC, children can still receive the above vaccines at the same time, but the injection sites must be different.

Previously, Ho Chi Minh City was allocated 87,500 doses of Moderna vaccine by the Ministry of Health to serve the vaccination campaign for children aged 5-11. Next is Hanoi with 72,700 doses.

According to the Ministry of Health, the country currently has about 11.8 million children between the ages of 5 and under 12 years old. Of which, about 3.6 million children have been infected with Covid-19. Children who have been infected with Covid-19 need to delay vaccination for 3 months after recovering from illness.
