10th grade new program: Let students choose the right subjects

Right from the 10th grade, following the family’s orientation, Tong Quynh Chi focused on natural sciences. However, right before this year’s university entrance exam, I had an unexpected choice.

Tong Quynh Chi, a student at Thai Phien High School, Hai Phong said: “I see that through the process of exams and revision, I myself have not been trained, but my writing score is high, I see that I have a social inclination.” .

In fact, accompanying high school students for many years, many teachers said that cases like Chi are not uncommon. Many students in the last semester have changed the selection combination. Obviously, students choosing a combination of career-oriented subjects from grade 10 need special attention.

Ms. To Truong Thi To Quyen, a teacher at Thai Phien High School, Hai Phong shared: “There are children who can be shaped from the beginning, but some children do not know what subject they like until the end, so since 10th grade, we haven’t been able to figure it out yet. If we can learn about them, if we don’t know their capacity, our counseling will be more limited”.

Determining this importance, Luong The Vinh High School, Hai Phong is pushing the enrollment schedule early to promptly organize career guidance activities. It is expected that after enrollment, the school will organize for students to try to study all elective subjects as a basis for building appropriate subject combinations.

“We survey to see which subjects are suitable for students and also organize career counseling for students and parents to have career orientation,” said Ms. Ho Thi Dinh, Vice Principal of High School. Luong The Vinh, Hanoi said.

As one of the few high schools with career-oriented teaching, Pham Ngu Lao School is relatively convenient when implementing the new program. To direct students to become future entrepreneurs, the survey of their favorite subjects and career aspirations has been carried out right from the time of enrollment.

While private schools are proactively implementing new programs in many different ways, most public schools are still waiting for guidance. Most recently in Hanoi, Deputy Minister of Education and Training, Nguyen Huu Do has asked secondary schools to take questionnaires on the needs of students to choose subjects according to the new 10th grade program, to be completed by the end of April. 2022.
