3 sailors of US aircraft carrier mysteriously died in less than a week
Navy said 3 sailors on American aircraft carrier USS George Washington was killed in less than a week.
According to CNN, the Criminal Investigation Agency US Navy and local authorities are investigating these deaths.
One sailor was found unresponsive on board the carrier on April 15, while two other sailors were found dead on April 9 and 10.
“While the incidents are still under investigation, there are no early indications that there is a correlation between these tragic events,” said Navy spokesman Reann Mommsen.
The US Navy did not specify the cause of death of any of the three sailors, but a special psychiatric rapid intervention team was dispatched to the ship. These groups are tasked with providing mental health support shortly after traumatic events, such as death.
The US Navy has identified the sailor who died on April 9 as third-class retail services specialist Mikail Sharp. The sailor found dead on April 10 was third-class interior electrician Natasha Huffman. The Navy did not identify the third sailor, who was found unresponsive on board the ship on April 15 and died.
“We extend our condolences to the family, friends and fellow sailors,” Mommsen said.
USS George Washington is a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. The vessel is at Newport News, Virginia, for refueling and a major overhaul. This is a one-time process to replace nuclear fuel and refit the ship for future operations.
