3 sailors who served on the USS George Washington died during the week; Navy investigation

Three sailors served on same aircraft carrier in Virginia Navy officials said died within a week.

A sailor was found unresponsive aboard the USS George Washington last Friday while the carrier was undergoing overhaul at Newport News Shipbuilding, Navy Lieutenant Colonel Cmdr said. Robert Myers said in a statement to NBC News.

The unidentified sailor was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, where the service member was pronounced dead.

That follows the case of two sailors “found dead” on April 9 and 10 in separate incidents, Myers said.

The Navy identified the sailor killed on 9 April, off the base at Portsmouth, as 3rd Class Retail Services Specialist Mikail Sharp.

Level 3 electrician Natasha Huffman was found dead off base in Hampton on April 10, authorities said.

Navy officials said there doesn’t appear to be any link between the three deaths.

“The Navy is cooperating with the local authorities where both incidents occurred, as both incidents are still under investigation,” Myers said. “We extend our condolences to the family, friends and fellow shipmates of the sailors.”
