Adult ‘intrusive’ stabs California high school student to death on campus

A California high school student died Monday after a man described by authorities as an “intruder” entered the Stockton campus and stabbed her to death.

The suspect, who Stockton Deputy Sheriff Eric Kane said was a man in his 40s, was taken into custody.

Kane said at a news conference, neither the man’s suspected motives nor the man’s relationship with the student were immediately clear. It is also unclear exactly where the stabbing at the school took place.

Superintendent John Ramirez Jr has identified the man as an “intruder”. School district spokeswoman Melinda Meza said he did not appear to be the parent of a student in an email.

Kane said the stabbing happened at Amos Alonzo Stagg High School shortly after 11 a.m. when a man approached the vehicle.

Ramirez said he entered the school through a gate and stabbed the girl several times.

Ramirez did not identify the girl, who is believed to have died at a local hospital.

A school district police officer “was on hand immediately and was able to do his job and help prevent that from continuing,” Ramirez said.

“It happened so fast they couldn’t stop it, but they were able to arrest him and detain him,” he said.

The school north of downtown Stockton has been locked down, Ramirez said.

Ramirez said county officials were scheduled to meet and reassess security protocols.
