Lori Vallow, Idaho mother accused of killing her child, pleads not guilty

Lori Vallow, Idaho woman charged with murder in the deaths of her two childrenpleaded not guilty on Tuesday.

Vallow entered the plea during an interrogation at Fremont County Courthouse, about 40 miles north of Idaho Falls.

She replied softly, “Yes, I do,” when Judge Steven Boyce asked her if she remembered signing her right to counsel, according to NBC affiliate KTVB in Boise.

Vallow remained silent on the charges against her and Boyce pleaded not guilty on her behalf, KTVB reported.

Vallow is “Rehabilitation and fit to continue” appeared in court earlier this month, almost a year after she declared mentally unfit to stand trial for concealing separate evidence. The murder at that time was to stay.

Daybell has previously pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. He was charged with three counts of first-degree murder, attempted murder and two counts of conspiracy. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

The indictment said the pair “endorsed and espoused religious beliefs with the intent of encouraging and/or justifying the murders” of Tylee, Joshua and Tammy Daybell.

Tylee was last seen on September 8, 2019. Police were able to find a photo from that day of Tylee during a trip with Vallow, Vallow’s brother, Alex Cox, and Joshua to the National Park Yellowstone, according to authorities.

Joshua, who has special needs, was last seen alive on September 23, 2019 at Kennedy Elementary School in Rexburg. When the police went to Vallow’s house to conduct a welfare check at Grandma’s reminder in November, Joshua was nowhere to be found.

But Vallow and Daybell never reported the children as missing and did not cooperate with investigators before they fled the state, Rexburg police said.

Daybell and Vallow got married a few weeks after Daybell’s first wife, Tammy Daybell, was found dead at her home in 2019. She is 49 years old.

Tammy Daybell’s death was initially assumed to be natural but was later classified as suspicious, and her remains were exhumed so an autopsy could be performed. An autopsy determined her death to be a homicide.

Vallow’s the fourth husband, Charles Vallow, also died in 2019. He was shot dead by Vallow’s brother, Alex Cox during a confrontation in Chandler, Arizona. Cox claimed self-defense. The Maricopa County Medical Examiner in Arizona ruled the death a homicide.

Vallow and Cox were questioned by police but were not charged.

Cox passed away in December 2019 of an apparent blood clot in his lung, the Associated Press reported. He was singled out by prosecutors on Tuesday as an accomplice in the killings of Joshua, Tylee and Tammy Daybell.

Before Charles Vallow died, he filed for divorce, claiming in the documents that his wife believe she was reincarnated and sent by a god to lead people in the Lord’s return in July 2020, and she told her husband that if he got in her way, she would kill him.

Vallow’s third husband and Tylee’s father, Joseph Ryan, also expressed “real and serious concerns” in court documents between their divorce and custody battle. The documents say Vallow was ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation after she told social workers that “death would be an option before giving Tylee to her father, Joseph Ryan, even while visiting.”

Ryan died of an apparent heart attack in 2018. An online obituary said Ryan was 59 years old.
