The Play Store installation tool for Windows 11 was found to contain malware

When Microsoft launched Windows 11, one of the most notable additions was support for Android apps, but again through the Amazon AppStore. However, users can still find a solution to install the Google Play Store on the new Windows.

One of these solutions is to use Windows Toolbox, however, Bleeping Computer detected that Windows Toolbox loaded the user’s computer with malicious extensions, suspicious commands, and possibly other malware.

Bleeping Computer explains that the tool is actually a trojan that executes hidden PowerShell scripts. These scripts have self-scheduled task execution in Windows 11, such as stopping tasks and creating other tasks themselves. It also creates a hidden C:\systemfile folder and then copies Chrome, Edge and Brave browser data to this folder.

A malicious Chromium utility is also created in this hidden folder, which will upload the victim’s location information and redirect users to phishing affiliate links. More specifically, Bleeping Computer detected that the user accessing whatsapp.com will be redirected to URLs associated with “money-making” scams, unwanted apps and games, and fake browser notifications.

For those who have run this tool before and are concerned about possible infection, Bleeping Computer says users can check the C:\systemfile folder. If yes, delete the systemfile folder and the folders installed as C:\Windows\security\pywinvera, C:\Windows\security\pywinveraa and C:\Windows\security\winver.png.
