Houston dollar store employee charged with murder in attempted sales shooting

A dollar store employee in Houston is charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a man attempting to retrieve merchandise from the business, police said on Tuesday.

Houston police on Sunday responded to Family Dollar in the city’s South Park neighborhood and discovered Antonio E. Batres, 21, had shot a 49-year-old man. The victim has yet to be identified.

Investigators said store employees confronted him when he tried to lift goods. Batres and the man entered into a physical conflict, and when the man’s back was turned, Batres shot him multiple times with a pistol, police said.

The man is presumed dead at the hospital.

Batres is being held at the Harris County Jail for $75,000. He will appear in court on Monday, prison records show. It is not clear if he has a lawyer.
