Brij Mohan, owner of an advertising agency in Chandigarh, the capital of Punjab and Haryana, successfully bought the license plate “CH-01-CJ-0001” at a local auction for $20,000. This special license plate is fitted to the Honda Activa motorcycle that Mohan just bought for only $1,000.

The large amount of money that Mohan spends to own a special license plate for a popular motorbike can surprise many people. But this is not the first time that a license plate with the number “0001” has been bought for such a high price in Chandigarh. In 2012, a license plate with the same tail number sold for $34,000 per person to use in a Mercedes S-class.
The license plate was acquired by Mahan in a special vehicle variables auction held April 14-16 in Chandigarh. At the event, about 378 number plates were sold with a total amount of 196,000 USD. The second most expensive license plate after “0001” is “0002” for $7,000.
Not only India, many countries around the world have public license plate auctions to generate revenue for the budget. The beautiful number plates will be owned by the auctioneer and can be registered for installation on different vehicles. Currently, Vietnam still issues license plates through random selection, but the Ministry of Public Security is studying and proposing projects to pilot the issue of license plates through auction.
