Russia successfully test-fired a one-of-a-kind missile
Russia has successfully launched a new intercontinental ballistic missile RS-28 Sarmat from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in the north of the country, the Russian Defense Ministry said on April 20.
According to RT news agency, this is the first test launch in a series of necessary tests before the Russian strategic forces receive the new weapon.
The missile flew through Russia and landed at a test site in Russia’s Far East. “The warhead touched down at the designated area at the Kuran training ground in the Kamchatka Peninsula,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.
The strategic missile is expected to replace the R-36M/R-36M2 Voevoda intercontinental ballistic missile. Compared with its predecessor, the Sarmat missile can carry more weapons and is equipped with new warheads.
Russian President Putin called the test an event of great significance to the country, and congratulated the military on the successful launch. “The new system has leading technical and tactical characteristics, capable of penetrating any modern missile defense system. Testing of the missile is expected to be completed by the end of this year. After that, the Sarmat missile was officially put into use.
