Samsung brings electric car battery production method to smartphones
By adopting the stacking method, the battery components can be packed more tightly, resulting in a higher capacity for the same volume. Now, a report from The Elec shows that Samsung is also preparing to use this method for smartphone batteries.
Batteries manufactured by stacking have at least 10% higher capacity than traditional coil designs. This means a 5,000 mAh battery like the one on the Galaxy S22 Ultra can have a capacity of 5,500 mAh or more. In addition, the phone can be made thinner and lighter, while keeping the same battery capacity.
Flat coil batteries cannot be packed tightly because the natural swelling that occurs when the battery is charged and discharged can warp the electrodes, damaging them in the process. The stacked design solves this problem and allows the empty space inside the battery to be filled.
The new batteries are said to be manufactured at Samsung’s Cheonan factory in South Korea. The company is also expected to convert one of the lines at its factory in Tianjin, China to use the new method.
