Two companies in China give female employees eight days off so they can find the love of their lives.

Two companies in the Chinese city of Hangzhou give single female employees eight days of paid leave to encourage them to find husbands. Unmarried employees over the age of 30 can take an extra 2 days off around the time of the Chinese Lunar New Year holiday. Furthermore, this leave period can be extended according to specific needs.

These are all companies under Hangzhou Songcheng Group, the group behind Songcheng – the largest tourist theme park in China. They employ hundreds of people who work every day in the office or as actors who appear in parades and park performances. But spending too much time inside the office or performing has prevented many women from getting a date.

“Female staff mainly work in internal functions and some are performers… some female employees have little contact with the outside world,” HR director, Huang Li explained, “So we give female employees more leave so they have more time and opportunity to interact with the opposite sex.”

The company believes that love makes employees happy and a happy employee is a dedicated employee. So, in order to bring “light” to employees’ personal lives and improve productivity, the company has launched a “dating vacation” mode. The announcement comes after a school also in Hangzhou grants single and childless teachers two and a half days of monthly leave to find a life partner.

These types of policies are not simply concerned with the personal lives of female employees but can be part of a larger cultural concern. If a woman in China does not get married beyond the age of 30, she is considered “shengnu” which means “remaining women”. Traditionally, if they haven’t found a partner by that age, they’re less likely to be chosen later on. But the reality is that many of these women are really focused on achieving their career goals or choosing to stay single entirely.
