6 people died tragically when a plane crashed into a truck in Haiti

Reuters reported that the accident happened in the capital Port-au-Prince – Haiti on April 20.

The small plane then took off from Port-au-Prince airport to the city of Jacmel, on the southern coast of Haiti at 3:44 pm. While trying to land in the Carrefour area, it hit a truck transporting soda bottles, killing at least six people and injuring several others.

Carrefour regional head Jude Edouard Pierre confirmed six people were killed, including the pilot.

Regional police commissioner Pierre Belamy Samedi told the AP that the truck driver was among the dead. According to Samedi, the plane’s pilot was taken to hospital, but his condition is unknown. Later, Haitian government sources said that the pilot also did not survive. There were a total of 5 people on the plane.

Video shared on the WhatsApp app shows plane parts in the middle of a road along with the bodies of the victims.

The Haitian National Civil Aviation Authority identified the plane as a Cessna 207. It experienced engine problems and issued a warning at 4:04 pm on the same day.

On Twitter, Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry offered condolences for the accident and encouraged the relatives of those killed.

About nine months ago, a small plane also headed for the city of Jacmel crashed near the capital Port-au-Prince, killing six people, including two American missionaries.

Demand for small planes to travel from Port-au-Prince to parts of southern Haiti has become more common, the AP said, after kidnappings and gang violence spiked, especially in the region. Martissant connects the capital with southern Haiti.
