Bitcoin Fear

The founder of the In Bitcoin We Trust website, renowned writer Sylvain Saurel, recently posted a fascinating article about people’s fears about today’s top cryptocurrency.

Saurel makes arguments around the subject of freedom. But at the same time, he probably overlooked the biggest deal-breaker, someone whose true identity is a mystery – Satoshi Nakamoto.

Although some say that this mystery is the key to people’s faith in Bitcoin, it is also the reason that many people feel fear of Bitcoin.

Responsibility is too much for some

Rather than flaws in the protocol or anything else inherent in it, Saurel says, freedom is what scares people with Bitcoin. Supporting his view, Saurel quotes divisive psychologist Sigmund Freud:

“Most people don’t really want freedom, because freedom involves responsibility, and most people are afraid of responsibility,” Saurel quotes psychologist Sigmud Freud.

Freedom and fear

Differences of opinion on the legitimacy of Bitcoin lead to more trust in the Central bank or the Bitcoin side.

Many people question why one person (or a group of people) had to create Bitcoin, leaving 1 million BTC (as of now about 41 billion USD) only to… disappear. There are many theories and arguments surrounding this, but we have to agree that, whatever the reason, the creator of Bitcoin has motives unlike you or me. Our inferences only add to the mystery of the situation, as well as add to the suspicion of crypto.

So what people expect from an anonymous project like Bitcoin is a big question. Furthermore, it is strange that while Bitcoin is celebrated for this, Altcoin projects with such anonymous founders tend to be branded as scams.

Perhaps, the only relevant answer to this problem lies in the value Bitcoin brings and the priority of the values in each person’s opinion. Bitcoin advocates value freedom over centralized control and are therefore willing to take risks. Conversely, some people will need a more secure intermediary.

This is similar to when a vegan values animal welfare over food enjoyment, it is unreasonable to expect everyone else to think the same way.

However, it is a fact that Bitcoin is becoming more and more accepted, perhaps freedom is also gradually taking precedence.
