British Prime Minister’s Office and Foreign Office hacked by spyware

“We can confirm that in 2020 and 2021, the company has recorded many agencies of the UK government network that have been targeted by Pegasus spyware,” reads Citizen Lab’s post.

Meanwhile, an NSO spokesman denied the allegation, saying it was “a mistake and cannot be related to NSO products for reasons of technology and agreement”.

A UK government spokesman also declined to comment on “security matters”.

Citizen Lab said the targets connected to the British Prime Minister’s office were made by NSO clients in the UAE, while the attack on the Foreign Office came from other countries such as Cyprus, Jordan and India.

Marios Pelekanos, a spokesman for the Cypriot government, said the country “categorically denies” any involvement in the matter.

“To avoid any speculation regarding Cyprus involvement, we affirm that the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, which has excellent relations with the British Government in all areas, has never taken such an approach. in general to the relevant British authorities,” a Cyprus spokesman said in an email to Reuters.

The governments of the UAE, Jordan and India were not immediately available for comment.

Pegasus is software that can be used to remotely compromise iPhones, allowing attackers to gain deep access to the target phone’s internal memory or turn them into audio and video recording devices.

Citizen Lab has found evidence that British devices have been compromised by monitoring Internet traffic and other digital signals sent to the NSO’s spy server controlling Pegasus.

“We identified the hacked networks based on a variety of network scanning methods and notified the UK authorities at that time for them to monitor,” said Ron Deibert, Director of Citizen Lab, at the same time. claims the company “does not have access to any devices and does not have any information on specific victims”.

The UK’s National Cyber Security Center has conducted an investigation into cyber intrusion into the Prime Minister’s office. Authorities also checked a number of phones for spyware, but were not conclusive.
