Dramatic victory over Chelsea, Arsenal rekindled hopes of participating in the Champions League
Chelsea and Arsenal created an attractive chase at Stamford Bridge in the first half. After only about half an hour of play, the audience saw up to 4 goals divided equally between 2 teams. Arsenal went ahead twice, but the lead of the away team lasted no more than 5 minutes.
Eddie Nketiah opened the scoring for the visitors, but it was the same player who lost the ball, leading to a somewhat fortunate equalizer situation for Chelsea. The same thing happened to Timo Werner not long after – he scored and then clumsily missed an opportunity that led to a counter-attack that resulted in the home team conceding.
Arsenal beat Chelsea right away.
Emile Smith Rowe (Arsenal) and Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea) were the next to put their names on the scoreboard to close the dramatic first half. Chelsea dominated possession, but it was Arsenal that created more chances in the first half.
After the break, the visitors once again took the lead with a goal from Eddie Nketiah. From that point on, Arsenal turned completely defensive to preserve the score. Chelsea’s possession percentage for the rest of the game was more than 80%. However, the home players only had 3 more shots.
Chelsea not only could not equalize, but also received more goals in injury time. Bukayo Saka scored from the penalty spot to seal a 4-2 victory for Arsenal.
This is Chelsea’s 3rd consecutive defeat at home in all competitions and also the second match in a row they have conceded 4 goals. Being eliminated in the Champions League, now the goal of Tuchel’s teachers and students is to win the FA Cup (meet Liverpool in the final) and at the same time defended its position in the top 4 of the English Premier League.
