E-commerce expands beyond big cities

If before, ecommerce mainly concentrated in big cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang, in recent years, online shopping activities have gradually expanded to neighboring provinces. This is a positive signal showing the strong development potential of the e-commerce industry in Vietnam.

In the past few years, COVID-19 epidemic causing many provinces and cities in Vietnam to implement social distancing, leading to people’s online shopping habits. According to Shopee’s statistics, in 2021 the number of sellers on this platform in the vicinity of major cities will increase by 70% compared to 2020, while the number of users in these areas will also increase by 40%.

E-commerce has flourished outside of big cities, creating opportunities for provinces and cities to promote their outstanding local agricultural products. With perishable products, shipping companies also actively invest in the transport system to ensure quality.

According to the Southeast Asia Digital Economy Report released by Google, Temasek and Bain & Company, from the start of the pandemic to the first half of 2021, Vietnam added 8 million new digital consumers and of which more than half come from non-major cities.

The increase in the number of new users from these regions is a positive signal that shows the potential to expand the e-commerce market, create more jobs, income and develop the national economy.
