FBI says Proud Boy tried to derail the investigation on January 6 by threatening agent

WASHINGTON – A Florida man has been arrested for allegedly pepper-spraying police at Capitol above January 6and people whom law enforcement officials say later allegedly made a threatening call to the FBI agent investigating his role in the riots.

Barry Bennett Ramey, who officials say is affiliated with Proud boys, was arrested in Florida on Thursday, according to court records. He is facing charges of assaulting federal law enforcement officers with a dangerous or deadly weapon; impede law enforcement; entering or remaining on restricted grounds with intent to obstruct; knowingly commits an act of physical violence when using or carrying a dangerous or deadly weapon; and an act of physical violence on Capitol grounds.

Earlier this month, according to the FBI oath, Ramey called the FBI agent who was investigating his case and read aloud the agent’s home address. He then texted the dealer the dealer’s used car identification number.

The FBI affidavit, which also cites “information FBI Miami obtained from a variety of confidential human sources,” says Ramey “is listed on a primary list of members of the Proud Boys in South Florida.”

The Proud Boys are a group of Trump supporters who describe themselves as a group of “Western Europeans” and have a track record of attending events where violence breaks out. Trump, asked during the 2020 campaign about his support group, told the Proud Boys that “stand by and stand by. ”

Court records indicate that the same FBI agent under threat executed an arrest warrant for Ramey Thursday morning in Plantation, Florida. Ramey will make his debut in federal court in Fort Lauderdale on Friday. Court records do not list an attorney for Ramey.

The FBI has made nearly 800 arrests in connection with the January 6 attacks, and more than 250 defendants have pleaded guilty. Three defendants on January 6 were found guilty at jury trials, including an Ohio man who claimed he was “obey the orders of the president“when he broke into the US Capitol and stole a bottle of wine and a coat rack.
