“I say clearly and unequivocally that Germany is completely eliminating Russian energy imports,” he said. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said after a meeting with her Baltic partners on April 20.

Berlin has already taken steps to end its dependence on Russian energy imports, but it still takes time to completely end it.

Earlier, during a press conference in London with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on April 8, Prime Minister Olaf Scholz also said that Germany may stop importing Russian oil this year.

Germany, Europe’s largest economy, has recently stepped up efforts to reduce its dependence on Russian energy imports. Statistics show that Russian oil accounted for 25% of Germany’s imports as of early April, down from 35% before Moscow began its military campaign in Ukraine.

However, stopping gas imports is seen as a more difficult decision for Germany. The country imported 40% of its gas deliveries from Russia in the first quarter of this year.

Several European countries have called for a complete halt to Russian energy imports. This month, the EU approved a ban on Russian coal, but failed to reach an agreement on an oil and natural gas embargo. Russia supplies about 40% of the EU’s natural gas and supplies about a third of the bloc’s oil needs.

However, the EU remains optimistic about Russia’s ability to phase out gas on its own, claiming that it will be able to cut fuel consumption by two-thirds by the end of the year. According to the European Commission, alternative fuels will be imported from the US, Norway and Azerbaijan. The EU currently transfers about $850 million to Russia every day to buy Moscow’s oil and gas.

The US has banned imports of Russian oil and gas, and Washington has repeatedly urged the EU to do the same. The administration of President Joe Biden is committed to filling the void with Washington’s liquefied natural gas, a fuel much more expensive than most European countries. Countries in the region currently lack the infrastructure to store large quantities.
