Hai Phong tourism has not developed commensurate with its potential

The Deputy Director General of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism said that Hai Phong has many favorable conditions for tourism development, but has not yet taken advantage of and exploited its full potential.

On April 20, in Cat Ba town, Cat Hai district, Hai Phong Department of Tourism held a seminar with the theme “Hai Phong tourism – Golden opportunity for breakthrough”.

The workshop focused on discussing the inherent advantages, shortcomings and problems of Hai Phong tourism to find solutions to awaken the city’s tourism potential in general. Cat Ba in particular.

Mr. Nguyen Le Phuc, Deputy General Director of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, said that Hai Phong has many favorable conditions for tourism development, but has not yet fully exploited its potential and strengths. In 2019, Hai Phong only received about 1 million international tourists out of a total of 18 million visitors of Vietnam.

The reason, according to Mr. Phuc, is that Hai Phong still has some limitations such as: the speed of tourism infrastructure development has not met the demand; The tourism environment has not been completely handled, especially during the peak season of domestic tourists. The situation of passenger vehicles congested at Got – Cai Vieng ferry on the way to Cat Ba island on public holidays has not been improved, causing frustration. Ancillary services, entertainment, commercial centers, world-class shopping areas, exhibition areas, conferences… are still lacking, and major international events have not been organized yet.

The representative of the General Department of Tourism said that Hai Phong should focus on developing tourism products in the direction of diversification, exploiting the city’s advantages and potentials, connecting with provinces across the country to create a corridor. Safe tourism aims to prolong the tourist’s stay and form a package tour. It is also important to create groups of tourism products to serve different types of visitors and develop new tourism products and improve the quality of existing tourism products.

Hai Phong also needs to orient and support businesses to develop specific tourism products; invest in the development of amusement parks, entertainment and ancillary services in order to increase spending capacity and diversify activities of tourists upon arrival; develop sea resort tourism, MICE tourism, golf, community – agro-ecology, culture – history tourism, culture, art and cuisine on the basis of linking business and service enterprises : travel, hotel, passenger transport and attractions…

Mr. Pham Ha, CEO of Lux Group, said that another reason is that the quality of tourism human resources in Hai Phong is not high. After the pandemic, resort service businesses in Cat Ba lack labor, especially high-class human resources. Mr. Ha suggested that the city needs to have training courses and additional human resources to create momentum for the services provided to tourists. This is because this work has many shortcomings, it is not clear, it is not like the period before the Covid-19 pandemic,” Chinh emphasized.

Sharing about breakthrough experience, welcoming 14.5 million visitors (more than 5 million international visitors), revenue reaching more than 29,000 billion VND in 2019, Mr. Trinh Dang Thanh, Deputy Director of Quang Ninh Department of Tourism, said that in order to have such a number, Quang Ninh has changed its mindset and innovated its growth model from “brown” to “green”, that is, from the mining industry to tourism services. Since then, Quang Ninh has planned tourism, as well as other areas to change the spatial appearance and socio-economic development of the province. At the same time, Quang Ninh has identified a number of key industries, taking tourism as the number one service industry to lead other industries.

According to Mr. Thanh, in order to create a breakthrough in tourism, localities must pay attention to infrastructure issues first. “No matter how beautiful and attractive the landscape is, if there is no road to it, the tourist makers cannot lead visitors to it,” said Mr. Thanh.

Director of Hai Phong Department of Tourism, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuong Huyen, said that tourism is one of the three spearheads for Hai Phong’s economic development in the coming time, along with seaport services and industry.
