IMF opens emergency funding for food-insecure countries
Vitor Gaspar, Director of the Finance Department of the IMF, shared in a press conference on April 20 that, Food Security is an important issue at this week’s meeting of IMF and World Bank (WB) members. Some countries need more financing, he said, especially those facing debt.
“If a country already has a program with funds, then additional funding related to food security priorities can be considered. In the event such a program does not exist or for some reason the country is not available,” he said. If the country does not want to use that channel, the possibility of emergency financing is also open to this situation,” – Reuters quoted an IMF official.
Meanwhile, The Guardian reported, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said that “rising food and fuel prices are straining the budgets of ordinary families to the limit”.
She warned of a “double crisis” from the war Ukraine and the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the head of the IMF, this is a “major setback to the global recovery”. The warning came a day after the IMF cut its global growth forecast.
