iPhone 14 will have autofocus front camera

Renowned analyst Ming-chi Kuo has just revealed that the iPhone 14 may come with an improved selfie camera, with autofocus and wider aperture.

According to Theverge, unlike the current fixed focus design, the selfie camera that supports autofocus can allow iPhone 14 to take clearer pictures even when the user is closer to the camera or further away. Mr. Kuo thinks that the aperture of f/1.9 above iPhone 14″ will be wider than f/2.2 on the iPhone 13, which will add background blur and help let in more light, making for better nighttime selfies or FaceTime portrait mode.

Previous reports have all suggested that the iPhone 14 Pro will get rid of the notch to switch to a punch-hole design. While this means Apple will have to fit the upgraded camera into a smaller space, it’s not an unprecedented challenge. For example, Samsung’s Galaxy S22 has camera selfie supports autofocus and is in a circular shape. While Samsung has had autofocus selfie cameras for years, it’s not a common feature on other products that rely on fixed focus.

A notable detail in Mr. Kuo’s tweet is that this upgraded front camera may appear on all four new iPhone 14 models, suggesting that Apple will not see it as a feature that attracts customers to the Pro series. If this detail is correct, it will be good news for those who cannot afford the version iPhone 14 Prowhich was previously rumored to have the advantage when it comes to the A16 Bionic chip and a higher resolution main camera.

The current iPhone’s selfie camera is still quite good, but the fixed focus support has significantly limited its ability to work. As expected, iPhone 14 will be launched by Apple in September this year.
