A performer at a South Carolina haunted house was shot after scaring a group of visitors over the weekend when a man opened fire with a gun he thought was a prop, police said. said.

Myrtle Beach Police said Keal Latrell Brown, 39, was touring the Haunted Mansion of the Hollywood Wax Museum on Saturday with several others when the group was spooked by a performer.

One of the group fell to the floor and a gun slid to the ground and lodged in Brown’s leg.

Brown told investigators he believed the gun was part of the show and “picked it up and fired it twice,” police said. Authorities said he hit the performer on the shoulder once.

Brown was arrested Tuesday and charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor “for knowingly giving the firearm used in the shooting to a minor,” police announced. on Wednesday. Myrtle Beach’s NBC affiliate WMBF reported that the minor was Brown’s 15-year-old, and investigators did not know to whom the gun belonged.

The investigation included statements from victims, witnesses and Brown as well as review of surveillance footage. Police said additional charges are likely.

During Wednesday’s hearing, the victim said he had trouble sleeping at night and had been off work since Saturday and did not know when he would be able to return, WMBF reported.

Online records show Brown was released from prison later on Wednesday after posting a $25,000 bond. He was also ordered not to contact victims or their families.

Attorney information for Brown was not immediately available.
