Massive fire kills 7 people at research facility in Russia
A large fire broke out today (April 21) at a military research facility in the northwestern Russian city of Tver, killing at least seven people and injuring 26 others.
This information was revealed by a source from the local emergency service to TASS news agency. The source also said the number of casualties is likely to increase.
Tver officials said the fire had spread to a total area of up to 2,500 square meters before being localized by rescue forces. A Mi-8 helicopter dispatched to the scene had to drop at least 10 containers of water to put out the fire.
According to preliminary records, some people were injured by inhaling smoke or jumping out of windows to escape the fire. An electrical failure is believed to be the cause of the incident.
Fires are quite common in Russia. The country records hundreds of fires each year, often caused by poor infrastructure and lax safety management.
