Microsoft is about to disable the 39-year-old protocol in Windows

Microsoft has announced plans to disable the SMB1 (Server Message Block) protocol that was born from the DOS operating system.

SMB (Server Message Block) protocol provides solutions for applications in computer to read and write files and request services from computers on the same network. SMB1 was created in 1983 at IBM, Microsoft was deprecated in 2017 through the Fall Creators Update on Windows 10.

As of 2017, Microsoft has stopped installing the SMB1 server service in all versions Windows, but keep the client service in the Home and Pro versions. The protocol was not removed from these versions of the operating system because Windows users needed to connect to a NAS device, an older machine that only supported SMB1.

Computers will automatically delete SMB1 after 15 days if it is not detected that SMB1 is in use. Microsoft stopped installing support for SMB1 in the Pro versions with the release of Windows 10 version 1809. Windows Insider Dev builds have also recently deactivated SMB1 in the Home editions.
