Sea ice arises when water freezes, usually floating on the ocean’s surface. In addition to the “huge” amount of ice on the continent, the Antarctic region also possesses a large amount of drift ice in the surrounding seas.

According to statistics, the amount of sea ice in Antarctica has shrunk to less than 2 million km2. This is the lowest level since the first experts started recording the data more than half a century ago.

During the last measurement in February 2022, water levels in the Bellingshausen, Amundsen and Weddell seas – seas usually covered with ice in Antarctica – were about 30% lower than the average from 1981-2010.

In March 2022, the amount of sea ice covering Antarctica was also 26% lower than the 1991-2020 average, the lowest in 44 years.

Using data from the National Snow and Ice Data Center (USA), the team from Zhongshan University (Taiwan) suggested that in the summer analysis, thermodynamics is the main cause in the processes. promote sea ice melting in the Antarctic sea.

According to the team, this occurs due to anomalies in the uneven heat transport in the Bellingshausen, Amundsen, western Pacific Ocean and especially the eastern Weddell Sea.

Infrared radiation also increases in the summer at the same time as the La Nina combination and the strong westerly wind belt, contributing to record low Antarctic sea ice levels as measured.

According to Greenpeace, the ocean around Antarctica is one of the fastest warming regions on Earth. In many locations, the average temperature reached more than 3 degrees Celsius.

If temperatures continue to rise at the current rate, the ice shelves will also be affected. Ice shelves can collapse, glaciers will melt into the ocean, putting sea levels at risk of rising tens of centimeters.
