Ship crashes into bridge

Hai PhongThe engine stalled while docking at Hoang Dieu port, Hong Kong’s Outrivaling 3 ship (China) drifted freely and crashed under the Hoang Van Thu bridge.

At around 3:30 p.m. on April 21, the ship Outrivaling 3 was 118.35 m long, 19.4 m wide, full of goods with a total tonnage of 12,088 tons, and crashed under the Hoang Van Thu bridge, on the riverside in Hong Bang district.

The crane tower on the ship was stuck under the bridge, the stern part of the ship collided with the embankment, knocking down a piece of railing about 10 meters long and the lighting system.

Chairman of Hai Phong City People’s Committee Nguyen Van Tung came to the scene to direct the incident; At the same time, they sent a police force to guard and ban vehicles from crossing Hoang Van Thu bridge from 16:00 this afternoon.

At 9:30 p.m. on the same day, the Outrivaling 3 was still stuck under the bridge. The authorities have mobilized many tugboats to clamp the bow and stern of the ship, wait for the low tide to push the ship back to Hoang Dieu port and free it from the bridge.

Mr. Ta Viet Dong, Director of the Hai Phong Civil Engineering Project Management Board, said that according to preliminary assessment, the collision did not affect the structure of Hoang Van Thu bridge much. However, the city will have to wait for the leading experts to appraise and conclude.

The initial cause, according to Mr. Dong, was that the cargo ship Outrivaking 3 stalled while entering piers 7 and 8 of Hoang Dieu port. At high tide, the ship was pushed by the current to drift freely upstream of the Cam River about 200 m, and then crashed into the steel girder of Hoang Van Thu bridge.

Hoang Van Thu Bridge crosses the Cam River, connecting the city center with the North Cam River new urban area, Thuy Nguyen district. The project has a total investment of more than 2,170 billion VND, technical traffic in October 2019.

The bridge is 1,570 m long, 33.5 m wide, including 4 lanes for motor vehicles, 2 lanes for mixed traffic and 2 sidewalks. The bridge has 3 spans, the main span is 200 m long with a clearance height of 25 m. The bridge has a unique architecture, inspired by the image of “Sea bird’s wings”.
